Around the CFL: Red-hot Burris leads surging Stamps

Football Betting Lines

09/21/2007 - Hamilton, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have the misfortune of meeting a red-hot Henry Burris on Friday night.

Burris was 14-of-23 passing for 336 yards with five touchdowns in leading the Calgary Stampeders to a 44-22 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. That boosted Burris' season total to 24 touchdown passes, tops in the CFL, and helped Calgary to its third straight win.

In addition, Burris has thrown 14 touchdown passes in Calgary's last three games and has surpassed 300 yards passing in six of his last seven games.

That's bad news for Hamilton as the Ticats' defense has given up an average of 303 yards passing per game, tops in the CFL. The good news, though, is Calgary is 2-3 on the road this year and the Ticats do have a 6-2 home record against the Stampeders, dating back to 1999.

CHEATWOOD DEBUT: It looks as if Edmonton defensive end Tim Cheatwood will make his 2007 debut Sunday against the Montreal Alouettes. Now, that would be a nice bit of irony, considering Cheatwood began the season with Montreal.

Cheatwood spent last year with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but had a season-ending knee injury that required surgery. He signed with the Alouettes in the offseason but opened the season on the CFL's nine-game injured list.

However, once the former Ohio State Buckeye was eligible to return, Cheatwood was released by the Alouettes and eventually signed with Edmonton. Now, with the Eskimos having released defensive lineman Rahim Abdullah and hurting at that position, Cheatwood could get his chance to play Sunday against Montreal.

TUCKER BACK: A healthy Jason Tucker will do nothing but help Edmonton's playoff drive.

The lanky receiver missed four games following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. The Eskimos lost three of those games and head into their game versus Montreal sitting fourth in the West Division, four points behind third-place Calgary.

In just his second game back, Tucker had 10 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown in Edmonton's 47-28 win over Montreal last week.

ALLEN, RITA MAKE UP: Toronto Argonauts quarterback Damon Allen and general manager Adam Rita kissed and made up this week following Rita's comments about Allen.

Rita told a Toronto radio station this week that the Argos had been stunted at the quarterback position because of Allen's presence with the CFL club and that once he came off the injured list it wasn't a guarantee that Allen would suit up.

Allen, 44, in his 23rd CFL season and pro football's career passing leader, is on the injured list with a toe ailment. He's scheduled to come off the injured list in time for Toronto's third-to-last game of the season.

The comments irked Allen, who found them insulting. But Rita and Allen spoke face to face the following day and Rita explained that he was taken out of context.

NEW CAREER FOR PALMER: Jesse Palmer, the former New York Giant, San Francisco 49er and Montreal Alouette, has taken a new career path.

Palmer, who gained notoriety for his role in The Bachelor, is now working as a broadcaster with ESPN in the U.S. as well as TSN and CTV in Canada.

Palmer was drafted in the fourth round, 125th overall, in 2001 by the New York Giants. He spent four seasons with New York before being released prior to the 2005 season.

After working out with both Minnesota and Oakland, Palmer signed with San Francisco on November 1, 2005 after injuries to both Alex Smith and Ken Dorsey. But once the two returned, he was released.

Palmer re-signed with San Francisco in the offseason, but was again released in training camp.

Palmer then joined the Montreal Alouettes on September 11, 2006 but never saw any action with the CFL club.

STEGALL AILING: The Toronto Argonauts might not have to worry about facing the CFL's top receiver this weekend.

Milt Stegall, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers star receiver, is ailing with a bruised shoulder and isn't likely to suit up for the club when it takes on Toronto at the Rogers Center on Sunday.

That would be a blow to the Bombers as Stegall is leading the CFL in receiving with 47 catches for 786 yards and five touchdowns.

However, the Bombers still have an abundance of offensive threats in running back Charles Roberts (second overall in CFL rushing with 968 yards), receivers Terrence Edwards (50 catches, 740 yards, five touchdowns) and Derick Armstrong (56 catches, 740 yards, four touchdowns) as well as quarterback Kevin Glenn (CFL-best 3,286 passing yards).

The Bombers will also have a new quarterback in tow. Earlier this week, the club signed Zac Taylor, who threw for 5,850 yards and 45 touchdowns during his final two seasons at the University of Nebraska.

NFL Sports Betting

NFL betting action is back! At MySportsbook, all of the pro football odds are posted for the NFC North. Check out how we see the four teams in this cloudy division stacking up this year in the chase for the playoffs! Green Bay Packers (+125) - With QB Aaron Rodgers leading the offense and DC Dom Capers working his magic on defense, the Packers are a real force to be reckoned with.

Virtually nothing changed on this offense for Green Bay from last year to this year, save for the addition of rookie OT Brian Bulaga to the bunch. Expect more huge numbers from the Pack, and a relatively favorable schedule should get them over the hump and into the playoffs once again this season. My NFL Betting Predictions: 11-5, 1st place in NFC North Minnesota Vikings (+130) - There are still too many unknowns about the Vikes this year. There is a huge difference between QB Brett Favre and either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels under center. Plus, is Favre comes back, is he really going to be able to keep his pick total under double digits again? Depth at running back looked like it might have been an issue with RB Chester Taylor fleeing in free agency, but drafting RB Toby Gerhart should pick up the difference. This defense is still suitable, but with a first place schedule, making the playoffs is going to be very tough regardless of whether #4 comes back or not.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year. No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.

Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.

The Patriots will make NFL betting fans a lot of money this season, get in early and enjoy the cash.

Problem with Bears?

Chicago, IL - New Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and star linebacker Brian Urlacher shot down reports of a rift, saying they're simply not true.

"There's nothing between us," Cutler said Thursday, when he reported to training camp. "I just want to put that to rest. There never has been anything between us."

Bet on NFL

Urlacher added: "I never said what I was quoted as saying and that's it. I have a lot of respect for Jay. I think Jay knows that."
Former Bears receiver Bobby Wade caused a stir when he told Minneapolis radio station KFAN-AM that Urlacher used a profanity while questioning Cutler's manhood during a conversation in Las Vegas last weekend. Wade, who now plays for the Vikings, said Urlacher used a profane version of the word "wimp" during the interview that had to be edited out.
go radio station WSCR-AM also reported that Urlacher had to be restrained from confronting Cutler during organized team activities.
"I wouldn't go face-to-face with Brian, anyway," Cutler said. "No, that's never happened. I've hung out with Brian away from the facility numerous times and we've always gotten along."
Urlacher, noting he was limited by a groin injury, denied the reports in an interview with the Chicago Tribune and did it again when he reported to camp.
"I didn't practice this summer, so I don't know how I would fight the guy if I didn't practice," Urlacher said. "We have no problems. I'm excited about football starting. I'm excited to have him as our quarterback."
Why would Wade say that?
"I don't know," Urlacher said. "Maybe he's jealous because we have a good quarterback now."
Cutler said the first he heard of any friction was when he got a call from Urlacher to clear the air. Urlacher, however, said he had already taken several calls from teammates wondering if the reports were true when Cutler phoned.
"He called me and I said, What's up (expletive), what are you doing?'" a grinning Urlacher said, uttering the same word he allegedly used with Wade. "It's so dumb to me that this even got to this point, but it did and then here we are."
better place after going 9-7 and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. They have a franchise quarterback for the first time in decades after acquiring Cutler in an offseason trade with Denver. But there are questions about his attitude following a fallout with Broncos management and new coach Josh McDaniels.
His critics include former Bears coach Mike Ditka and former Indianapolis and Tampa Bay coach Tony Dungy, one of Smith's mentors. Smith, however, said Cutler has been a model teammate so far while denying any animosity with Urlacher.
"There's no issue with Jay and Brian, except Brian and Jay are both excited about being teammates for our club this year," coach Lovie Smith said. "No more than that. We can't spend a whole lot of time on something that isn't true. I have talked to the players. Whenever something comes out, you have to address it, but it's a non-issue."
In some ways, Cutler is getting a second chance in Chicago, an opportunity to repair his reputation.
Smith said another quarterback - Michael Vick - deserves one, although he doesn't see it happening with the Bears, who lack an experienced backup. The former Atlanta Falcons star, who served a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring, said Thursday he is getting close to signing with a pro football team.
"A second chance, like everyone in society who has paid their debt to society," Smith said. "He deserves a second chance. As far as we're concerned, we like this team that we have right now."
Particularly the new quarterback.
"Me and Brian have been on a good relationship since I've been here, and I expect it to continue that way," Cutler said.
