A's thump Indians

Baseball Betting Lines

04/24/2010 - Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Justin Duchscherer threw six shutout innings, leading the Oakland Athletics in a 10-0 rout of the Cleveland Indians to open a three-game set.

Duchscherer (2-0) has now gone three starts and 18 2/3 frames without giving up an earned run for the A's, who have won two straight following a three-game losing streak.

Kurt Suzuki homered for the second straight game and third in four contests, totaling three hits, and Ryan Sweeney went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for Oakland, which has beaten Cleveland six straight times. Former Indian Kevin Kouzmanoff added two hits and two RBI, while Rajai Davis drove in three in the lopsided win.

Jake Westbrook (0-2) allowed four runs, eight hits and a walk in five-plus frames for the Indians, who managed just five singles while committing three errors.

Cleveland, which has scored the second-fewest runs in the AL, have scored no more than one run in three of its last four games (1-3).

The A's squandered an opportunity with runners on the corners with nobody out in the third, but the Indians followed suit when Matt LaPorta grounded into a double play in the fourth with the bases loaded and one out.

Oakland, though, broke through in the home half. Daric Barton led off with a walk, and Suzuki singled two batters later. With two outs, Kouzmanoff lined an RBI single to center to give the hosts the lead for good.

The A's added three runs in the sixth. Barton again got on base to start an inning, doubling to right. After Sweeney knocked him in with a single, Suzuki's two-run blast made it 4-0.

With Jamey Wright pitching for the Indians in the eighth, Oakland blew it open with six more runs.

With runners on the corners and one out, Kouzmanoff knocked in a run with a base hit to left, and an error by second baseman Luis Valbuena loaded the bases for Adam Rosales, whose fielder's choice groundout plated one for a 6-0 game.

Cliff Pennington worked a walk to re-load the bases, and Davis launched a three-run double. Two batters later, Sweeney capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Game Notes

Duchscherer gave up two unearned runs in his last start...Westbrook is still looking for his first win since April 8, 2008...Cleveland designated hitter Travis Hafner walked twice and has reached base in each of the 15 games he has played...Dating back to last season, the Indians have lost 22 of 25 road games.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.

Thursday, August 21

NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37

NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road

In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):

* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games

Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.

Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.

Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.

That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.

Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.

NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.

Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
