05/23/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A terrific pitching matchup is on tap this evening in the Bronx, where Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees play the rubber match of their three-game series against Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
Pettitte has pitched well this season for the Yankees, but has been victimized for the most part by a lack of run support and a poor bullpen. Such has been the case in his last two starts, as he has surrendered just five runs in 14 1/3 innings but lost both outings.
The 34-year-old left-hander was tagged with a hard-luck loss to the New York Mets on Friday, as he allowed three runs and five hits in seven frames to fall to 2-3 on the year and raise his earned run average to 2.83.
Pettitte is 0-1 in three outings (two starts) against the Red Sox this season and is 13-6 lifetime against them with a 3.18 ERA in 25 appearances, all but two of which have been starts.
Schilling, meanwhile, has won his last four decisions since losing on Opening Day to the Kansas City Royals. However, he has not picked up a decision in either of his last two starts.
Against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, Schilling gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings of his team's eventual 4-2 win.
Schilling, who is 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA on the year, received a no decision against the Yankees earlier this season and is 7-5 in his career against them with a 4.57 ERA in 20 games (15 starts).
In the middle contest of this set on Tuesday, Manny Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead Boston to a 7-3 win.
David Ortiz had three hits, a run scored and one RBI, while Kevin Youkilis extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games for the Red Sox, who have won two of three.
Youkilis finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored
The homer was Ramirez's 51st against New York. Only Jimmie Foxx (70), Ted Williams (62), Hank Greenberg (53) and Carl Yastrzemski (52) - all of whom are Hall of Famers - have hit more home runs against the Yankees.
Mike Lowell doubled and homered, while Julio Lugo and Coco Crisp also scored a run for Boston, which sports the best record in baseball at 31-14.
Boston starter Julian Tavarez (3-4) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. He threw 106 pitches, the most he has thrown in one start in his career.
Robinson Cano, Hideki Matsui and Derek Jeter all had a hit and scored a run for the Yankees, who have lost three of five and fell 10 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.
Mike Mussina (2-3) was torched for 10 hits and seven runs in 6 2/3 innings, raising his earned run average to 6.52.
On the milestone front, Jeter, who is in the midst of a 17-game hitting streak, needs just one hit to tie Joe DiMaggio (2,214) for fifth place on the Yankees' all-time list.
Boston took two of three matchups with New York at Yankee Stadium from April 27-29 and also swept a three-game series at Fenway earlier this season.
