03/31/2010 - Key Biscayne, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tomas Berdych staved off a match point and then beat world No. 1 Roger Federer for just the second time in his career, winning in three tough sets to advance to the quarterfinals at the $4.5 million Sony Ericsson Open.
Federer saw this before against Berdych, as the Czech gained a two-set lead in the fourth round of the 2009 Australian Open before falling to 1-8 against the Super Swiss. This time was different though as Berdych gained a thrilling 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6) victory in the final match Tuesday that lasted past midnight.
The men's all-time Grand Slam king Federer titled here in 2005 and 2006, but won't be back for a return trip to the final thanks to blowing a lead in the deciding tiebreaker.
Federer, the reigning Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open champion, Federer sent a return long to give Berdych a mini-break and a 3-2 lead in the tiebreaker, but the Czech gave it right back before gaining a 4-3 edge.
Federer fired an ace, but on his serve again made an unforced error with a backhand into the net. Berdych then tumbled to the court on a great net approach, but the world's No. 1 player held his ground and deposited the easy open-court winner and a 5-5 tie.
Berdych lost a second straight point on his serve, sending a forehand barely wide. He challenged he call, but replays showed the ball out by less than an inch.
Berdych saved match point with a forehand winner, then gained the upperhand before Federer's long return gave the Czech the match victory. Berdych's only other win over Federer came at the 2004 Olympics.
After losing the first set, Federer rallied in the second to force the tiebreaker despite not being able to convert on some good break-point chances. In the tiebreak, Federer gained the upperhand and then won the final three points, the final two courtesy of long forehands from the 16th-seeded Berdych.
The third set was set up for Berdych to pull off the upset, as the Czech gained a 4-2 lead before falling apart. Federer held serve in the next game and then won the first three games on Berdych's serve before breaking to square the match.
Berdych sent a return wide to give Federer the 5-4 lead, but the Czech bounced back by winning the next game. Both players then held serve to force the tiebreaker.
Next up for Berdych will be 10th-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who was a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) winner over seventh-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic.
Former world No. 1s Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick posted fourth-round victories Tuesday.
The fourth-seeded six-time major champion Nadal got past 15th-seeded fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in just under two hours. The 2005 and 2008 Miami runner-up Nadal tallied one more break (3-2) than his countryman, including a pair in the second set.
Nadal's quarterfinal opponent will be flashy Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The sixth-seeded Roddick handled German Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on the hardcourts at Crandon Park. The American overcame a 1-4, love-40 deficit in the first set before improving to a perfect 4-0 lifetime against Becker.
The Wimbledon runner-up Roddick moved on in 1 hour, 20 minutes with the help of eight aces, including a match-ending one, and a pair of service breaks. Becker, meanwhile, swatted 11 aces and managed only one break of the big- hitting favorite on Day 7.
The 27-year-old Roddick was the Miami champ six years ago.
Roddick's quarterfinal opponent will be dangerous Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) mild-upset winner over 27th-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.
Fifth-seeded French Open runner-up Robin Soderling advanced by outlasting ninth-seeded former Aussie Open runner-up Fernando Gonzalez 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 in 1 hour, 39 minutes. The ever-improving Swedish Soderling smacked 15 aces and piled up five breaks against the Chilean Gonzalez, who failed to enjoy even one break-point chance in the setback.
Next up for Soderling will be gritty Russian Mikhail Youzhny.
In other round-of-16 play, an eighth-seeded Tsonga drilled 12th-seeded former top-ranked Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-2 and a 13th-seeded Youzhny was leading Mardy Fish 6-1, 1-0 when the American retired from the bout due to a back injury.
The newest champion here will collect $605,500.
