Galaxy, Real settle for share of points

09/20/2007 - Salt Lake City, UT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake battled through a little less than 80 minutes of uneventful soccer Wednesday night, with home Real commanding a 1-0 lead after a Carey Talley penalty kick in front of its largest crowd of the season - 24,633.

But with a little over 10 minutes to play in the Major League Soccer fixture, the two teams put their respective coaches and fans through a roller coaster of emotions.

First, the Galaxy, who had lost eight of their last nine, tied the score on a Landon Donovan penalty kick. A little over five minutes later Donovan set up Gavin Glinton on the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1 and it was euphoria on the Galaxy sideline ... for about a minute.

Real Salt Lake was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out on the ensuing kickoff and Javier Morales, who had entered the game two minutes earlier, fired a shot over the defensive wall and into the net, past the outstretched hands of Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

With that, the teams settled on a share of the points on a 2-2 draw, ensuring the Galaxy would remain in the Western basement, two points back of their hosts Wednesday night.

The first half of the game saw very limited action in either offensive third. An Edson Buddle turn-and-shoot 10 minutes in was the Galaxy's best chance with a Kyle Beckerman chip from the byline that grazed the crossbar being Real's best chance midway through the opening frame.

RSL finally broke the stalemate after the break in the 56th minute when Cannon had trouble controlling a low shot and pulled down Yura Movsisyan, who was lunging for the rebound in the six-yard box.

Referee Terry Vaughn immediately called for a penalty kick, which Talley buried for his third goal of the season. It was the fourth penalty kick goal Cannon has allowed in league play this season.

The Galaxy knotted the game up a little over 20 minute later when Jean-Martial Kipre took down Mike Randolph in the Real area, prompting Vaughn to return the favor to the Galaxy.

Donovan stepped in a fired a shot to the top right corner, past a diving Nick Rimando.

Donovan was instrumental in the next goal as well when he took control of the ball near the center line, drove into the offensive third and played a perfect through-ball to Glinton, who broke behind the defense and fired past Rimando for the 2-1 lead in the 85th minute.

Morales scored his first MLS goal less than a minute later to close out the scoring.

Real Salt Lake will try to play spoiler and hurt Colorado's playoff chances when it hosts the Rapids Sunday while the Galaxy host FC Dallas later that evening.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
