Rockies edge Dodgers

09/20/2007 - Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brad Hawpe's two-run homer in the eighth inning catapulted Colorado to a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third installment of a four-game series.

Matt Holliday hit a pair of solo home runs for the Rockies, who have a flicker of playoff hopes, trailing San Diego by 4 1/2 games for the wild card spot. The Padres rallied in the ninth inning for a 5-3 win at home over Pittsburgh.

Yorvit Torrealba also homered for the Rockies, winners of four in a row.

James Loney knocked in three runs for the Dodgers, losers of four in a row. Los Angeles fell 5 1/2 games behind San Diego.

"They played us tough," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "We brought a knife to a gun fight."

Josh Fogg allowed eight hits and three runs over five innings in the start for Colorado, while Brad Penny was touched for nine hits and four runs -- three earned -- in five innings.

Garrett Atkins singled off Jonathan Broxton (4-4) to start the Colorado eighth, and pinch-runner Kaz Matsui stole second. Hawpe then belted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right field to give the Rockies the 6-5 lead.

"I had a pretty good feeling," Hawpe. "I knew it was gone, but I couldn't over celebrate. We had another inning to go and I was just hoping we could shut them out that last inning."

Jeff Kent singled off Manny Corpas to start the ninth, and pinch-runner Wilson Valdez moved to second on a ground ball, but was left stranded. Corpas picked up his 16th save by retiring Russell Martin on a fly ball and Nomar Garciaparra on a grounder.

Brian Fuentes (2-5) threw the eighth inning to get the win.

Loney singled in Juan Pierre in the opening inning, but Holliday homered in the bottom half.

Loney's foul ball error prolonged Torrealba's at-bat to lead off the second, and the homer moved the Rockies ahead, 2-1.

The seesaw battle continued in the third, as Loney singled in a run, but Holliday homered again for a 3-2 contest.

Cory Sullivan doubled in Torrealba in the fourth before Loney's groundout drove in Pierre in the fifth for a 4-3 margin.

The Dodgers went ahead in the sixth as Penny singled with the bases loaded to drive in Martin, and Tony Abreu scored on a Matt Kemp groundout. However, Kent flied out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Game Notes

The Dodgers left 11 men on base...Colorado leads the season series, 8-6.
