Woods among British Open champs to compete in Champions' Challenge

05/26/2010 - St. Andrews, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tiger Woods is among 28 former British Open winners that have accepted invitations to compete in a four-hole challenge event the day before the start of this year's championship.

The 150th British Open will be played at St. Andrews in Scotland from July 15-18.

Others scheduled to compete include five-time winners Tom Watson and Peter Thomson, three-time champs Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Gary Player, and two-time winners Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman and Padraig Harrington.

Ballesteros, the 1984 champion at St. Andrews, is expected to make his return to the golf course for the event after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008.

Kel Nagle, the oldest living champion, will not participate. Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Nick Price also declined invites.

"We're very pleased that there will be such a distinguished and full field for this special occasion," said Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal & Ancient Club. "It's sure to be a wonderful celebration befitting the 150th anniversary of golf's oldest major."

The challenge event will feature seven teams of four champions each playing holes one, two, 17 and 18. The best individual score per team on each hole will count. In the event of a tie, the team with the highest average age will prevail.
