06/02/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Washington Nationals are catching fire and will continue a three-game series this evening with the San Diego Padres at RFK Stadium.

Washington posted a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the series opener on Friday, as Ronnie Belliard came through with an RBI single in the 10th to lift Washington to its second straight win and seventh in 10 tries.

Cristian Guzman hit a single to left with one away and hustled to third on Ryan Zimmerman's single to right. Guzman then crossed the plate on Belliard's single to right field to win the game. Zimmerman went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI and Guzman finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored for Washington, which is still last in the NL East standings.

Dmitri Young had two runs batted in and went 4-for-4 for the second straight game, matching a franchise record with hits in eight consecutive plate appearances. He is now tied with Andre "The Hawk" Dawson, who accomplished the feat in 1983 for the Montreal Expos.

Nats pitcher Matt Chico started on the hill and was charged with three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings for the no decision. Jon Rauch got the win in relief after hurling a scoreless 10th inning.

Washington will send rookie Levale Speigner to the hill this evening and he is 1-1 with an 8.39 ERA over 15 games (3 starts) in 2007.

Speigner was dealt the loss in his last outing on May 26 against St. Louis, permitting eight runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.

The young lefty was perfect through one-third of an inning in his only appearance against San Diego on May 2. The Nats lost the game, 7-3.

Justin Germano gets the nod for the Padres tonight and is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in four starts this season. He has lasted at least six innings in each of his four trips to the mound.

Germano defeated the Milwaukee Brewers his last time out on May 26, yielding two runs and five hits through six innings.

The right-hander has never faced Washington in his career.

San Diego entered Friday's game having won two straight, five of six and 10 of its last 13 games. But it suffered the loss on Friday even though ace pitcher Jake Peavy gave up three runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work. Reliever Cla Meredith was dealt the loss after his performance in the 10th inning.

Josh Bard went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Terrmel Sledge drove in the other run for the Padres, who are a game behind both Los Angeles and Arizona for the top spot in the NL West division.

Bard was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for aggressive actions in the top of the 11th inning of San Diego's 4-2 extra-inning win over Pittsburgh at PNC Park on Thursday. He obviously appealed the suspension.

San Diego took two of three games against Washington from April 30 - May 2 at Petco Park and has won six of seven at RFK Stadium. The Padres own an 18-5 mark over the previous 23 matchups with the Montreal/Washington franchise.

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).

Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.

A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.

Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.

"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.

De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.

The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.

The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.

De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.

Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.

But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
